All God’s Children

Yesterday the Humane Society Shelter where I volunteer held its Christmas Dinner for all the homeless animals. Volunteers cooked, baked, and prepared healthy foods for all the residents, be they dogs, cats, rabbits, or guinea pigs. Even a couple of cockatiels. Before dinner, each animal was visited by Santa who opened his sack and gave each a toy and and treat. Then they were served their Christmas feast. I don’t know who enjoyed it more. The animals or us.

The local CBS affiliate sent a camera crew and broadcast some coverage on the evening news. The daily paper also sent a photo journalist so I expect we will see something in the paper. The shelter Director recorded the whole thing on a live feed and posted it on their Facebook page. If anyone would like to see it, pull up the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society page and you can watch a video of the event. We hope of course that this will stimulate more adoptions and donations. Non profits, just like everyone else has suffered during the pandemic, so we are always trying to find ways to improve our support.

Needless to say, it was a fun afternoon, enjoyed by all. And what did I do you may ask? Well, although not often seen, I was the guy in the red suit.

And Gigi. If you are reading this, a kitten hissed at me and took a swing. Just sayin.

About oldmainer

I am a retired manager living in Southern Maine and a would be writer of poetry, narratives, short stories, and random opinions, and that's how Oldmainer was born. Recently, I decided to try an experiment. I added photography to the mix, using only a cheap cell phone with a limited camera and the editing software that came with it, and added the blog site Inklings at poormanspoet.wordpress.com to showcase the results. So, feel free to use whatever you find interesting or worthy, but please honor the terms of my copyright when and if you do. They may not be much, but they are still a piece of me. I appreciate your checking me out and hope that you find something that will encourage a return visit. Thanks for stopping by.

  1. Cats are like that sometimes. Maybe it was her way of asking to go home with you? She would probably keep the dogs in line. I’m assuming it was a she. Sounds like a wonderful shelter and I’m sure everyone had a wonderful time. It’s nice to read something so sweet. Merry Christmas.
