Little Known Facts

I, probably not unlike you, receive a lot of email from friends and family that are jokes, funny stories, and interesting videos.  Most make me smile or laugh and frequently think of someone that would also enjoy them and forward them on.  And then there are the ones that are meant to make a point, be it political or of a specific area of interest like supporting our troops.  Many ask that you “forward this to everyone you know. I just did”.  And there of course are those that are of questionable origin that send me right to Snopes to fact check the message.  Truth is, I enjoy them all in some fashion or another.  So it was, when I opened one the other day that was a list of quaint little known facts.  Things that the average person would not necessarily know and, in reality, probably could care less about.  But, in the spirit of chuckles, eye rolling, and just plain disgust, I will now share some of them with you, properly annotated with some insightful comments of my own.  Here goes.

1) A tiger’s tongue is so rough it can lick the paint off buildings, and strip the skin from the bones of an animal.
I hear you.  I have had mornings when I awoke with a breath like that.

2) Hugs that last over 20 seconds release chemicals in your body called Oxytocin that makes you trust someone more.
Unless the point of contact is around the neck or is being administered by a cellmate.

3) Some people have a natural alarm clock allowing them to wake up when they want. This is actually caused by a stress hormone.
I had employees like that. They woke up every day at 5 PM.  Must have been the stress of missing dinner.

4) Dogs are capable of understanding up to 250 words and gestures. The average dog is as intelligent as a 2 year old child.
People however seem to be losing their ability to understand a lot of words, but are improving substantially in hand gestures.

5)Without your pinky finger your hand would lose 50% of it’s strength.
However, without your second finger, you would lose 50% of your ability to communicate.

6)An elephant can smell water 3 miles away.
I have friends that can do the same thing with beer.

7)Talking to yourself is a good way to help retain your focus while completing a task.
It is also a good way to get yourself removed from society.

8)You can survive entirely on a diet of potatoes and butter which provide all the necessary nutrients the human body needs.
Probably true.  I know I have survived for weeks on French Fries, Pizza, and Cheese Curls.

9)Humans have more empathy for dogs then they do for other humans.
I’ll woof to that!

10)Tea is the most consumed drink in the world after water.
Oh yeah.  Then why are there so many bars and so few tea rooms?

11)Humans are born with two fears. Falling and loud noises. Every other fear is learned.
So true.  I was much older when I learned about marriage.

12)Banana is a happy fruit. Eating just one can help you relieve irritable emotions, anger, and depression.
Beating someone with the stalk however also has restorative values.

13)Did you know that there are no Canary’s in the Canary islands.
Virgin Islands, same thing. There are no Canary’s there either.

14)Crocodiles can hold their breath for an hour.
I know guys that can only hold their beer for about 30 minutes

15)25,000,000 of your cells died while you were reading this sentence
Probably from shear boredom would be my guess.

About oldmainer

I am a retired manager living in Southern Maine and a would be writer of poetry, narratives, short stories, and random opinions, and that's how Oldmainer was born. Recently, I decided to try an experiment. I added photography to the mix, using only a cheap cell phone with a limited camera and the editing software that came with it, and added the blog site Inklings at poormanspoet.wordpress.com to showcase the results. So, feel free to use whatever you find interesting or worthy, but please honor the terms of my copyright when and if you do. They may not be much, but they are still a piece of me. I appreciate your checking me out and hope that you find something that will encourage a return visit. Thanks for stopping by.

  1. I really liked that. Hahahahaha. Excellent way to start the day. However, I never receive a single thing in the mail, from family or friends. Nothing at all. I don’t actually know anyone who does, other than you. That’s great. 🙂 Love these facts. I think we all know people like dogs better than they like other people. You could say that about almost ANYTHING.
