Irony: A state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects and is often amusing as a result.
While reading the paper the other day, I came across an article announcing that the next in a class of speedy Navy warships is going to be named in honor of Maine’s state capital, Augusta. In his announcement, Richard Spencer, Secretary of the Navy said “Maine has been an important part of the U.S. Navy and Marines through every conflict”. He went on to say that with the naming of the ship, “Maine is once again proudly ingrained in the annals of American History”.
The Bath Iron Works here in Maine is one of the largest of the shipyards employed by the Navy and is presently involved in the manufacture of the newest design of the destroyer class of ship and has been a supplier of ships to our Navy dating back to the late 1800’s. What better tribute to the State of Maine then to build a ship that will honor it’s capital right here on it’s shores.
The future USS Augusta will be built in Mobile, Alabama.
Am I missing something here?? Probably not. It is a government thing.
